Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria introduces new surgical techniques in shoulder pathology

Dr. Aveledo is the subject of a media report on a novel shoulder surgery technique.

The procedure, called “Arthroscopic Superior Capsular Reconstruction”, offers potential benefits for complex rotator cuff tears with severe tendon retraction that cannot be repaired using conventional methods.

In cases of large rotator cuff tears, besides causing pain and loss of shoulder mobility, there is an increased likelihood that the joint will degenerate into osteoarthritis. One of the potential advantages of this surgery is therefore avoiding the situation where the only option left to relieve the patient’s suffering is a prosthetic joint replacement, which would mean a much larger operation with greater risks.

The operation, performed endoscopically through four incisions of less than 1 centimetre, involves covering the upper part of the joint left exposed by the absence of the rotator cuff with a biological collagen membrane.

Dr. Aveledo, who coordinated the operation, comments:

“The patient treated with this procedure was discharged and, after two weeks of follow-up, reports that shoulder pain is much lower than before the operation and that they can sleep better.”
