What's going on with your shoulder?

Shoulders nearly always hurt the same way; what lies behind them almost never does. These are the four most common conditions, and how they differ.

The rotator cuff tendons wrap around the head of the humerus and keep it centred as the arm moves. The cross marks where tears most often occur.

Rotator cuff

Pain lifting the arm, loss of strength and pain at night.

Arthroscopic repair
The labrum is the fibrocartilage ring around the glenoid. It deepens the socket and is what stops the humeral head slipping out.

Instability & dislocation

The shoulder pops out or gives way. Common in athletes.

Arthroscopic stabilisation
The glenohumeral joint is where the humeral head sits against the glenoid. Cartilage separates the two surfaces, and it is what wears away in arthritis.

Arthritis

Worn cartilage: pain with use and less and less range.

Shoulder replacement
The joint capsule is the sleeve that wraps the whole shoulder. In capsulitis it tightens and thickens, and range is lost in every direction.

Frozen shoulder

Stiffness that locks the shoulder, with pain even at rest.
